Causes and Prevention of Stenosing Tenosynovitis

The primary cause of stenosing tenosynovitis is chronic strain resulting from prolonged excessive friction. Prevention hinges on correcting poor hand posture and taking regular breaks to avoid excessive pressure on the tendons.

Main Causes

Chronic overuse: This is the primary cause. The tendon sheath is a tube that surrounds the tendon. When the fingers or wrist are used frequently over a long period (such as during prolonged typing, using a cell phone, doing housework, knitting, or playing a musical instrument), the tendon undergoes repeated excessive friction within the sheath, leading to localized swelling and tissue proliferation. Over time, the tendon sheath thickens, the lumen narrows, and the tendon itself thickens, leading to difficulty in gliding or even getting stuck.

Poor Posture and Trauma: Prolonged use of a keyboard and mouse with the wrist suspended or excessively bent, or acute impacts or sprains to the hand, can increase stress on the tendon sheath and trigger inflammation.

Other Factors: Women are more prone to this condition due to hormonal changes after childbirth or during menstruation. Additionally, underlying conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and diabetes, as well as genetic factors, can increase the risk of developing the condition.

Daily Preventive Measures

Maintain Proper Posture: When using a computer, adjust the height of the keyboard and mouse so that your wrists remain level or tilt slightly upward. Keep both hands balanced as much as possible, avoid excessive bending or extension of the wrists, and do not let them hang in the air for long periods.

Take Regular Breaks: Avoid prolonged periods of manual labor or desk work. It is recommended to take a 10–15-minute break every 1–2 hours to move your hand joints and perform simple exercises such as clenching your fists and stretching your fingers to relieve muscle tension.

Warm Compresses and Keeping Hands Warm: After finishing work, rub your fingers and wrists together or soak your hands in hot water. In winter, it’s best to use warm water when doing laundry to avoid exposing your hands to cold temperatures. Apply a warm compress when you feel fatigued.

Avoid Excessive Strain: Do not exert excessive force when using your hands, and try to avoid lifting heavy objects to reduce pressure on the tendons and tendon sheaths.

Stenoform tendinitis is essentially a condition caused by overuse, so the key to daily care is reducing friction and getting adequate rest. If you experience stiffness when bending or straightening your fingers, snapping sounds, or noticeable wrist pain, it is recommended that you visit the orthopedics or hand surgery department at a hospital as soon as possible. Early intervention through rest, heat therapy, or medication can usually provide rapid relief.
